Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will work under faculty in the medical care of hospitalized equine patients. The intern is expected to rotate on emergency duty with interns and surgical residents and will be heavily focused on clinical care. Teaching veterinary and veterinary technology students is accomplished within the course of clinical service.
Summary of the Medicine Internship
• 70% appointment to the Equine Medicine Service, 30% other specialty clinical rotations, with direct supervision and support of 1 of 2 equine-focused DACVIM (LAIM) at any given time. Clinical rotations within the farm animal hospital with 1 of 2 farm animal-focused DACVIM (LAIM) may be arranged for applicants expressing interest.
• Equal rotation with 1-2 other interns and 3 surgical residents for Emergency Duty, receiving all surgical and medical emergency patients.
• Participation in weekly Medicine Journal Club
• MSU CVM provides supplemental compensation, in addition to regular pay, to house officers when they provide emergency after-hours care to patients beyond the duties expected of their positions.
• Welcome participation in research collaboration with small clinical projects sponsored by the ORGS House Officer Grant Program.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include a DVM from a College accredited by the AVMA COE and prior successful completion of an equine/large animal internship or equivalent practice experience. Excellent interpersonal skills are required. This position requires ability to conduct vigorous physical activity. Candidates must be eligible for veterinary licensure in Mississippi. Ideal candidates for this position are those wishing to pursue a large animal medicine residency.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
