Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervise employees in land preparation, planting, cultivating and harvesting crops or research plots. Supervise employees in the application of pesticides and herbicides. Calibrate pesticide application equipment for applications. Advise researchers in various aspects of work. Supervise the maintenance of farm equipment, such as, tractors, combines, cotton pickers, sprayers and related equipment. Order and purchase supplies and ensure adequate supplies are available for use by research staff. Maintain accurate and current inventory of equipment. Recommend the purchase of farm equipment, providing justifications when necessary. Maintain written and computerized records related to farm operations and prepare various reports for accounting purposes. Confer with research personnel regarding maintenance of research plots and related matters. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Five years of experience in general and technical farming operations.
Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources Management.

Preferred Qualifications:

Post-secondary course work in the agriculture field.
Supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-Knowledge of agricultural research procedures through prior on the job training or research course work.
-Ability to calibrate farm chemical applicators.
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., with one often to the point of being objectionable. Injuries may require professional treatment.

Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.

Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Job occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, and lifting more than 100 pounds.

Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
