The Sponsored Program Accountant provides accounting support within the Controller and Treasurer’s Office and assists Business Managers, Accountants and other fiscal personnel at the university. Assists in providing post award research administrative support by analyzing, reviewing, and recording restricted fund financial entries to the general ledger. Works in coordination with the Sponsored Program Accounting team to meet all payment requests and financial reporting requirements per the terms and conditions of all assigned sponsored and non-sponsored restricted funds.

Salary Grade:  I- 14   II/ III- 15

Department Profile:

Sponsored Programs Accounting is primarily responsible for managing the restricted funds of Mississippi State University.

This includes calculating and posting overhead, invoicing the appropriate agencies, monitoring timely receipt of the funds, and preparing financial reports for external agencies.

Additionally, our office coordinates the time and effort reporting cycle, processes cost transfers, performs non-sufficient fund checking on restricted funds and continuously monitors accounts for compliance purposes.

It is our goal to provide friendly, efficient service to all users of the sponsored programs accounting system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in positions allocated to this classification. The absence of specific statements of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position.
1. Monitor project expenditures for adherence to contract/grant term conditions and compliance with Federal/State regulations.
2. Prepare financial reports and invoicing documents as required.
3. Assist with development and implementation of sponsored program accounting system enhancements.
4. Offer guidance and support to various users of the sponsored programs accounting system to include Deans, Department Heads, principal investigators, departmental Budget/Business Managers, etc.
5. Prepare monthly indirect cost distributions for indirect costs recovered on sponsored projects.
6. Prepare letter of credit draws for sponsored projects as assigned.
7. Prepare accounting entries for recording to general ledger, as necessary.
8. Perform close-outs on expired funds.
9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Level I: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related discipline. No experience required. (Salary Grade 14)

Level II: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related discipline plus 2 years of experience. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent. (Salary Grade 15)

Level III: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related discipline plus 4 years of experience. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or the equivalent. (Salary Grade 15)

Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed. When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may apply additional relevant education toward the experience requirement at a rate of one (1) year education per year of required experience.

ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS):

 

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
2. Experience in Research Administration
3. Experience working in Banner software application
4. Advanced degree (E.g., MBA) and/or professional certification (E.g., CRA, CFRA, CPA)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Well-developed interpersonal and customer service skills.
2. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
3. Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
4. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
5. Working knowledge of database query tools.
6. Independent self-starter with strong work ethic.
7. Experience in work settings requiring teamwork and high-volume assignments.
8. Ability to manage priorities and meet multiple daily deadlines.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. Routine deadlines; usually enough lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor; frequent evening and weekend work is required.
2. Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands.
3. Job occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting to 25 pounds.
4. Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
