The College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University, invites applications for a residency in Anatomic Pathology.

Salary Grade:  12

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This post-DVM training program will prepare the candidate to successfully complete the certifying examinations of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. This residency is a three-year position which is renewable on an annual basis assuming satisfactory performance. Residents work closely with 5 board certified anatomic pathologists and 2 board certified clinical pathologists. Training includes performing animal autopsies, reading surgical biopsies, and teaching veterinary students in both didactic and clinical settings. The caseload is diverse with a notable domestic and farm animal percentage. Diagnostic investigation is strongly supported as are resident publications. The program has a partnership with the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies located on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, so there is potential to do some work with marine mammals if the candidate is interested. There is a digital slide scanner based at the MS Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory in Pearl, MS, with preparations for a second digital slide scanner to be housed at the CVM.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include a DVM degree and the ability to attain licensure in Mississippi.
Mississippi licensure requires having successfully passed the NAVLE exam. For students that have not attended an AVMA accredited veterinary school, successful completion of the PAVE program (Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence) or the ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification program is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

The position will begin July 1, 2026 with a starting salary of $45,000/year. Residents at Mississippi State are provided $2,500 annually to support professional development. Medical and dental insurance is provided. All benefits eligible employees are required to participate in a retirement plan with employer contributions.
