Department Profile:
The Mississippi State University Department of Chemistry includes 29 faculty and staff and 90 students, hailing from more than 16 countries and over 20 states. The department graduates around 20 Bachelor’s, 5 Master’s, and 10 Doctoral students each year. In addition, the department teaches approximately 5000 students each year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. The successful candidate will establish a strong independent research program including obtaining independent funding through federal agencies, foundations and industry partners. The candidate will recruit and mentor PhD level graduate students, publish research in peer-reviewed journals and participate in professional conferences to disseminate their research.
2. The successful candidate will pursue continuing professional development and remain active in their research community.
3. The successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels related to their expertise as assigned by the department.
4. The successful candidate will serve as an active member of appropriate professional societies and will provide leadership and service to their Department, College and University.
5. The successful candidate will adhere to the University’s safety requirements, including chemical and biosafety. They will follow the best practices in the responsible conduct of research, and they will likewise train graduate and undergraduate researchers on how to perform research in a relevant laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have a PhD in chemistry or closely related field as well as at least one year of postdoctoral training. Candidates should demonstrate excellence in research and a strong record or clear potential for outstanding teaching and mentorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications include expertise in theoretical / computational chemistry, with a special interest in individuals with the demonstrated ability to develop and use novel applications of either artificial intelligence / machine learning or quantum computing on chemical or biochemical systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proven experience with AI/ML applications in chemically-related research problems.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
This position requires work in both classroom and laboratory environments. The successful candidate must be able to handle chemicals safely, operate scientific instrumentation (including mass spectrometers), and work with standard laboratory equipment. Duties may involve standing for extended periods, performing repetitive motions, and occasionally lifting materials or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The role also requires adherence to laboratory safety protocols, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and compliance with institutional safety and training requirements. Some evening or weekend hours may be necessary for research or teaching activities.
