The College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University, invites applications for a Rotating Equine Medicine and Surgery Internship. This position will work under faculty in the of the Equine Medicine and Surgery Services in-hospital.

Salary Grade:  UC

Rotating Equine Medicine and Surgery Interns

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The intern is expected to rotate on emergency duty equally with the equine house officers and will be heavily focused on clinical care. Teaching veterinary and veterinary technology students is accomplished within the course of clinical service.

• 100% appointment to the Equine Medicine and Surgery Services. Time will be divided between the equine medicine and surgery service with direct supervision and support of 1 of 2 Diplomates of Veterinary Internal Medicine and 1 of 4 Diplomates of Veterinary Surgery at any given time.
• Equal division of after-hours emergency duty between house officers, receiving all surgical and medical emergency patients during the equine rotation.
• Up to 6 weeks of elective rotation opportunities of which 2 weeks may be done outside of MSU-CVM.
• Participation in weekly Journal Club for Internal Medicine and Surgical Journal Club when assigned to those services for the week.
• MSU CVM provides supplemental compensation, in addition to regular pay, to house officers when they provide emergency after-hours care to patients beyond the duties expected of their positions.
• Welcome participation in research collaboration with small clinical projects sponsored by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS) House Officer Grant Program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must be eligible for employment in the U.S. at the time they apply for a position at MSU-CVM. Mississippi State University employs only citizens of the US, Canada, and Mexico, nationals of the US, and aliens authorized to work in the US by the time of commencement of the position.

Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (see http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/colleges_accredited/allcolleges.asp) and have passed the NAVLE licensure examination, or a graduate that has completed the entire ECFVG qualification process (see http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp) by the time of the commencement of this position.

Interns are required to be USDA NVAP category 2 accredited.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
