The Diagnostic Imaging residency at Mississippi State University is a three-year program that fulfills the training requirements of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR). The program provides a post-DVM individual with educational experience in both small and large animal diagnostic imaging, under the supervision of Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Radiology, preparing them for ACVR board certification. Training includes formal course work as well as clinical experience. A certificate of Residency Training is presented after successful completion of the 3-year program. The resident is expected to participate in a research project, present his or her research at the national ACVR meeting, and submit a manuscript for publication in a refereed journal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The resident is responsible for assisting with radiographic, ultrasonographic, fluoroscopic, computed tomographic, and magnetic resonance imaging studies under the supervision of an ACVR Diplomate. Case experience is gained through interaction with clinicians and their patients from small and large animal services of the hospital. The resident is expected to monitor the clinical progress of patients undergoing diagnostic imaging procedures. Emergency radiology duty is shared with the full-time radiology technologists and fellow residents. Training in nuclear medicine is obtained through a formal agreement with the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, attendance at the Nuclear Medicine short course is encouraged. External rotations in specific areas of interest may also be available. The resident will frequently present case and topic rounds and lectures to interns and veterinary students. Regular teaching activities will also include demonstrations of imagining techniques and basic interpretive skills to veterinary students and veterinary technology students. The resident will also attend and deliver 1-3 lectures for the didactic radiology course delivered to the second-year student radiology course. The number of lectures delivered by the resident increases each year.

Minimum Qualifications:

Veterinary degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.

Internship or equivalent practice experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
