Position Function:

To provide primary health care at the Longest Student Health Center through a complementary relationship with physicians and other health care professionals. Provide day-to-day health care management of student concerns and illnesses.

Salary Grade:  17

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in positions allocated to this classification. 1. Assist the Director in the development and implementation of comprehensive contraceptive management and sexually transmitted disease awareness programs.
2. Exercise many individual judgments regarding patient care while using well-defined protocols.
3. Provide a wide range of nursing activities in episodic care and health promotion including health counseling and teaching.
4. Elicit and record pertinent information regarding patients' health history and seek to find the level of knowledge they have concerning their health problems.
5. Perform a thorough and accurate assessment of the patient's physical and/or emotional problem during the health examination.
6. After examining the findings, assist the medical and nursing management of episodic health care using established protocols.
7. Consult with members of the health care team in evaluating the effectiveness of health care plans.
8. Provide patient teaching and health counseling in an effort to help maintain an optimum level of wellness.
9. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Registered Nurses's degree and advanced training as a Family Nurse Practitioner. MSN.
2. Certification and licensing by the Mississippi State Board of Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in an out-patient clinical setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Considerable knowledge of interviewing and history-taking, ability to perform patient assessments and interpret laboratory findings.
2. Requires a mature, congenial individual that uses nursing skills to assess the patient as a whole.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.

Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.

Job frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping/kneeling,
crouching/crawling, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
