The Compliance Specialist works in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive compliance program in an assigned focus area: laws and regulations affecting campus safety, including the Clery Act, Stop Campus Hazing Act, Drug Free Schools Act, OSHA, as well as various state and federal laws affecting university youth programs.
The specialist works under the direction of the Director of Regulatory Compliance, advising and assisting university departments in developing and implementing policies, training, and best practices to ensure operations align with federal, state, and local laws.

Salary Grade:  15

Regulatory Compliance

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

•Serves as primary point of contact for compliance programs under the Clery Act, Stop Campus Hazing Act, Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, OSHA, and other laws and regulations affecting campus safety, including youth programs and minors on campus.
•Compiles and prepares required reports to external agencies, including the university’s annual Clery Act Security and Fire Safety Report.
•Advises and assists Director of Regulatory Compliance and others in developing appropriate policies, training, data sets, and reports in primary focus areas.
•Manages the university’s registration and compliance program for children and youth on campus
•Coordinates training and background screening for all programs involving children and youth on campus
•Works with campus partners regularly to develop and maintain compliance programs and protocols in focus areas. Conducts regular assessments to ensure compliance.
•Provides consultation and advice to campus partners on compliance-related issues.
•Investigates potential violations or other concerns within focus areas, prepares relevant report, and advises on corrective steps.
•Updates university administrators on legal and regulatory changes in focus areas.
•Assists in other compliance areas as assigned, including but not limited to FERPA, HIPAA, Title IX, ADA, and other applicable civil rights laws.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s
Focus: Related field

Minimum Experience (yrs.): Two years
Focus: Directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified above

Preferred Qualifications:

•Juris Doctorate or other advanced degree in relevant area.
•Experience specific to compliance in a higher education setting.
•Experience with employee training and/or training program development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•Knowledge and understanding of key legal and regulatory provisions as they apply to the university and its various units.
•Strong analytical, problem-solving, research and writing skills.
•Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively across organizational levels and with different units and divisions of the university.
•Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and work independently while collaborating with others.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

•No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
•Travel is normally limited, but travel to university facilities other than the main campus and/or to conferences is expected periodically.
•Frequent externally imposed deadlines, set and revised beyond one’s control. Interruptions influence priorities. Difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days.
