Position Function:
The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is offering a three-year residency program in comparative veterinary anesthesiology, concurrent with a Master’s degree in veterinary science. This program is offered in accordance with the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia’s (ACVAA) residency training standards, which may be accessed online at www.acvaa.org. Residents are expected to fulfill the credentials for their Master’s degree and for ACVAA board certification prior to completion of the residency. Residents will be evaluated semi-annually and, upon completion of the program, are expected to pursue ACVAA diplomate status. This program is under the supervision of two ACVAA diplomates and is supported by two Assistant Clinical Professors and eight certified anesthesia technicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Residents will be exposed to a broad case load during their clinical training, including equine, farm animal, small animal, and zoo animal species (via partnerships with the Jackson Zoo, the Marine Mammal Institute, and Cedar Hill Cat Sanctuary). Augmentation of clinical experiences via intramural and extramural out-rotations is also encouraged, and residents will be provided ample time for these activities. Residents often take weeks at partner veterinary schools to complete their cardiology, critical care, and exotic animal case requirements. Didactic courses will be offered in accordance with the requirements for completion of the Master’s degree, and some of these courses will include residency training activities, including journal club and textbook rounds. Residents will have the opportunity to participate in several teaching roles, including clinical and didactic rounds with rotation students, lab instruction, and lectures for second year veterinary students. In addition, the resident will participate in college-wide seminar and morbidity and mortality rounds. As required by the ACVAA training standards and the graduate program, the resident will be required to complete at least one research project during their residency. It is expected that the resident will present these findings at a scientific meeting and that a manuscript be accepted prior to completion of the program. Professional development is also strongly encouraged throughout the residency, and provisions will be made to allow resident participation in relevant conferences and training courses, in accordance with their interests.
Minimum Qualifications:
Veterinary degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
Internship or equivalent practice experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
