The Neurosurgery/Neurology (NNS) Residency at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine consists of advanced clinical training in medical and surgical aspects of canine and feline neurology. There will be opportunities for the residents to consult on neurologic cases in large animals and occasionally wildlife and exotic species. The resident will work closely with the three faculty neurologists, and other neurology/neurosurgery residents, interns, and the students on the NNS rotation to provide the highest quality of patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

All NNS residents will attend weekly didactic rounds. These will include resident rounds with additional monthly or bi-monthly rounds including neurology journal club (in conjunction with 3 other university NNS groups), NNS topic rounds, neuropathology rounds, and neuroradiology rounds. To fulfill requirements of the ACVIM (Neurology), NNS residents will have specific rotations through radiology, internal medicine, clinical pathology, and gross pathology with the option of rotating through both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery services to enhance their surgical training. After-hours emergency neurosurgery duty will be always shared among the NNS residents and with faculty back-up.
The NNS resident will be expected to contribute to didactic presentations within the college community, under faculty guidance, via student lectures, rounds presentations, and continuing education presentations. A minimum of one presentation (oral or poster) at a major veterinary conference (e.g., ACVIM Forum, ACVS Forum, SEVEN, VNS) is a requirement of the residency program. A residency project with the goal of subsequent acceptance of at least one manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal (e.g., JAVMA, JVIM, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Vet Surg) is also a requirement of the program. Opportunities for clinical and preclinical (bench) research abound at MSU-CVM. Continuation in the program on a year-to-year basis will be contingent upon an acceptable level of performance by the NNS resident. After successful completion of the program, the NNS resident will be awarded a "Certificate of Residency in Neurosurgery / Neurology". The NNS resident will be expected to attain board certification in the specialty of Neurology (ACVIM) at the end of the residency program and will have completed qualifications for pursuing the certificate of training in neurosurgery.

Minimum Qualifications:

Veterinary degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.

Internship or equivalent practice experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
