The diagnostic imaging internship at Mississippi State University is a one year, clinically based program, which provides a post-DVM individual with educational experience in both small and large animal diagnostic imaging. The program is designed to qualify individuals for entry into an ACVR-approved residency program leading to board certification in veterinary diagnostic imaging.

Salary Grade:  UC

Specialty Intern in Diagnostic Imaging

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The intern’s primary responsibility will be the acquisition of radiographic and computed tomographic images on both large and small animals under the supervision of the board-certified radiologists, diagnostic imaging residents, and diagnostic imaging technologists. Throughout the program, the responsibilities of the intern will progress from image acquisition and quality assurance to report writing. Opportunities for introduction to ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging will be available. Emergency radiology duty is shared with two full-time radiology technicians.

The intern will attend rounds and resident classes, including journal review and known case conference, as time permits. Regular teaching activities will also include demonstration of imaging techniques and basic interpretive skills to third-year veterinary students and advanced study fourth-year veterinary students. The intern will be encouraged to present at least one formal imaging-related college-wide seminar each year to the faculty, staff, and veterinary students. Completion of a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal is encouraged but is not required.

Upon successful completion of the program, an Internship Certificate is awarded.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must be eligible for employment in the U.S. at the time they apply for a position at MSU-CVM. Mississippi State University employs only citizens of the US, Canada, and Mexico, nationals of the US, and aliens authorized to work in the US by the time of commencement of the position.

Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (see http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/colleges_accredited/allcolleges.asp) and have passed the NAVLE licensure examination, or a graduate that has completed the entire ECFVG qualification process (see http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp) by the time of the commencement of this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
