Position Function:

To install, maintain, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment. Takes a lead role with subordinate personnel.

Salary Grade:  HVC-M

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Check assigned buildings and units’ heating and refrigeration systems daily.
2. Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, alter, install and operate air delivery equipment, support components, heating and ventilating units which include heating and cooling coils, preheaters and dampers, and associated control systems.
3. Be knowledgeable of all safety and mechanical codes. Inspect assigned jobs for compliance with code and University standards.
4. Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, alter, and install mechanical refrigeration systems.
5. Inspect, install, troubleshoot and repair of piping fixtures and equipment including hand valves, relief valves, pressure-reducing valves, lift pumps, vacuum pumps, circulating pumps, sump pumps, air compressors, hot water heaters, and expansion joints.
6. Work on traditional and computerized control systems and components associated with HVAC delivery systems.
7. Work on water treatment for various types of closed and open systems.
8. Monitors and cleans boiler system to maintain proper water temperature.
9. Cut, thread, and bend pipe, using hacksaw, pipe cutters, cutting torch, threading machine, and pipe bending machine.
10. Lubricate fans, motors, and pumps, change filters and belts, and adjust controls.
11. Test equipment for leaks and make corrections, where necessary.
12. Check gauges and make inspections for preventive maintenance.
13. Erect and work from ladders, scaffolding, boom trucks, and similar devices.
14. This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include overseeing the safe use of equipment and materials and maintaining safety standards for the support staff when working in hazardous or dangerous conditions.
15. Recommend requisition materials and parts.
16. Develop, fabricate, and implement innovative methods, components, and equipment to meet specialized needs.
17. Interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, technical literature, computer software, test procedures, and job specifications.
18. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent High School Diploma or GED

Experience: 6 yrs. in HVAC practices.

Substitutions:
Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources Management.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification or Licensure Requirements:
Valid Driver’s License and EPA approved universal refrigerant handlers certificate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade. Thorough knowledge of applicable electrical codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and national). Skill in reading and interpreting blue prints. Developed supervisory skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc.

Frequent-Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; travel or irregular hours often anticipated; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.

Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Job occasionally requires sitting, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting more than 100 pounds.

Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically, ability to distinguish colors.
