Position Summary:

This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position reporting to the Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletic Communications. Rollins considers coaches to be teachers inasmuch as they are instructing their student-athletes on how to perform their sport and credit is provided for sport participation. The coach is responsible for all phases of coaching a varsity sports program including sport instruction, administrative duties, recruiting, budget management including purchasing, caring for and keeping an inventory of all equipment, and hiring and supervising assistant coaches. Additional duties include program management, fund raising, planning and scheduling practices, games, transportation, meals and public relations. Athletics personnel must follow all NCAA and SSC legislation.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Teaching and tracking the skills of a competitive Varsity Men’s and Women’s Cross Country program from the basic fundamentals to the mental aspects necessary for success
  • Instilling positive values that will be helpful in their growth and development as well as stressing the importance of academics and other lessons of life
  • Administering in coordination with the Senior Program and Operations Coordinator running the program within the budgetary guidelines set forth by the Athletic Director (A.D.) and the Finance Department
  • Collaborating with the Athletic Communications liaison in making information available in a timely fashion and in promoting the Varsity Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Program
  • Creating schedule for intercollegiate competition and tournaments while minimizing missed class time
  • Collaborating with the Office/Travel coordinator in organizing all travel arrangements
  • Organizing pre-season training and preparation for coaching in practices and games
  • Responsible for recruiting quality student-athletes who can contribute to a competitive varsity program (Recruiting will be in strict compliance with the rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association ‘NCAA,’ Sunshine State Conference ‘SSC’ and College rules and regulations)
  • Continuing to improve knowledge of sport, rules, and regulations through conventions, clinics, seminars, and self-education
  • Responsible for game duties such as equipment handout and collection, filming of meets, various statistics, and other miscellaneous functions
  • Promoting the physical and mental well-being of all program participants
  • Collaborating with Counseling and Psychological Services and/or Student Success as necessary regarding student-athletes socio-personal relationships and academics
  • Maintaining communication and cooperating with the team's athletic trainer regarding prevention of injuries, rehabilitation, and the players' health
  • Ordering, caring for, and inventorying all equipment
  • Filing eligibility and Rollins/NCAA/SSC forms in a timely fashion
  • Supervising and developing assistant coaches if available as part of program
  • Organizing visiting team practice and supervision
  • Scouting opponents
  • Serving as a good role model for the student-athletes and as a representative of the college
  • Promoting the Varsity Men’s and Women’s Cross Country program and its participants through the media, speaking engagements, Anchor Club functions, high school coaches and programs like Alumni Weekend and an alumni competition
  • In consultation with Advancement and the Athletic Director, assist in fundraising for the program and participate in major fundraisers for the college as needed
  • Working closely with Rollins alumni and Anchor Club including attendance at all Anchor Club functions
  • Serving in any capacity as called upon by the A.D. such as the teaching of activity classes, hospitality room management, etc.
  • Performing related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree preferred
  • Three to five years of related coaching experience
  • Participation and/or coaching experience at the collegiate level
  • Valid driver license and acceptable MVR and criminal background check is required
  • Significant knowledge of and demonstrated success in coaching Varsity Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, recruitment and retention of student-athletes, and excellent teaching and motivation skills, preferably at the collegiate level
  • A proven record of integrity, high principles and demonstrated skill in developing and motivating student athletes academically and athletically
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in the environment of an academically demanding liberal arts institution and abide by all NCAA Division II, Sunshine State
  • Conference and institutional policies
  • Ability to learn and comply with all policies and regulations of Rollins College, the NCAA, and the SSC
  • Knowledgeable and follow the institution’s sports medicine guidelines
  • Ability to maintain open communication with the athletic trainer and team physician and protect the safety and well-being of their athletes through proper conditioning, skills training and game conduct
  • Must be certified in CPR, AED, and first aid as required by the NCAA

Work Environment:

  • Very fast paced and high-energy work environment.
  • Ability to work many nights and weekends during the sports season.
  • Flexible to ever changing schedule and media needs associated with intercollegiate athletics.
  • Work may require some visual strain.
  • Ability to lift objects of 50 lbs.
