Position Summary

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition seeks a Research Associate (Postdoctoral Researcher) to work on a funded collaborative project in the research groups of Dr. Teresa Bergholz and Dr. Jade Mitchell (Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering).  The primary responsibility for this position is to conduct a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) for foodborne pathogens in fresh produce. The primary duties will include engaging with industry partners, developing the QMRA models, and using traditional and molecular methods to measure the physiological state of bacterial foodborne pathogens on fresh produce.  The successful candidate will be expected to write project reports and scientific articles to communicate project activities and findings.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Food Science, Biosystems, Environmental

Minimum Requirements

  • A doctorate degree in Food Science, Biosystems, Environmental or Public Health Engineering, Microbiology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with statistical modeling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate has had experience in microbiological quantification, risk analysis; Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment; exposure science or modeling; and working in multi-disciplinary, team science environments.

  • Experience coding in R.
  • Experience engaging with industry partners and communicating across disciplines.
  • Experience with Q-PCR.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Good organizational skills.
