Position Summary

We're in search of a motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher to join our energetic team dedicated to our Indy Autonomous Car project. This initiative revolves around the convergence of machine learning, computer vision, and vehicle control. The selected candidate will spearhead the creation of innovative algorithms to empower high-speed autonomous racing.

Expectations include taking the lead in the technical advancement of the vehicle, guided by MSU faculty. This involves working alongside students and fellow researchers to conceive, develop, and integrate new features, as well as supervising system testing and refinement.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Formulates plans and specifications and chooses algorithms for software based on desired performance objectives.

  • Assumes a pivotal role as the primary developer for detection and tracking systems, employing camera, lidar, and radar data. Implements algorithms using C++, Python, and ROS, while harnessing TensorFlow or PyTorch for GPU acceleration.
  • Ensures thorough testing and evaluation of software, including overseeing code reviews.
  • Administers and documents the software system using Git and other relevant tools.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate and explain research findings and technical details regarding autonomous vehicles, in particular the autonomous Indy car, to various stakeholders.

This position offers a hybrid work setup, combining both on-site and remote work, with a required commitment of 40 hours weekly. While preparing for races and traveling, working hours need to synchronize with those of teammates. The role entails visiting project locations ahead of races for system testing, allowing for flexibility in both on-site and remote work.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Computer Science, Engineering, or related

Minimum Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline is mandatory.
  • Proficiency in at least two, preferably all, of the following: machine learning, computer vision, and vehicle controls is essential. Solid programming abilities in Python and C++ are a must.
  • Proficiency with Linux-based systems such as Ubuntu, as well as familiarity with tools like Bash, GIT, etc., is required.
  • Experience with Robot Operating System (ROS) is preferable.

Desired Qualifications

  • Additionally, a robust publication record and exceptional communication skills are highly desired.
