Position Summary

Pay Rate: $20.51 - $21.59 upon meeting probationary period requirements. This position is not eligible for remote work. Regular, in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

This position performs and oversees maintaining and restoring hard surface flooring in multiple buildings.  This position will work with the floor crew supervisor, building supervisor, and the customer on planning floor work in a building.  They will follow departmental guidelines for stripping and refinishing hard surface flooring. This position will will participate in the planning and execution of scheduled floor work as assigned by the floor crew supervisor. Follows safety regulations in an assigned area which involves lifting (25 lbs. to 50 lbs.), occasional heavy lifting (50 lbs to 75 lbs.);  operating heavy cleaning equipment, (i.e. automatic scrub machine, buffer, extractor, etc); frequent bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, stooping; considerable walking and standing. Must have ability to understand and give verbal or written instruction; read chemical, biological, or radioactive warning signs; wear a respirator; retain training information required for custodial floor restoration methods, equipment and products; work with student employees and be able to communicate and interact with the University community; serve as a liaison with the Department of Public Safety; maintain product inventory; make independent decisions to accomplish acceptable cleaning standards using appropriate methods, products and equipment; work inside or outside; sometimes exposed to harsh weather; work alone in vacated building, submit verbal or written reports as directed. 

Position Location: Will be assigned to IPF but will not run the day to day cleaning operation.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school graduate, GED, or equivalent.
  • Two years’ experience as a full time regular Custodian I with possession of MSU Custodial cleaning competencies certification and one year of satisfactory work experience in a commercial or institutional cleaning operation with possession of MSU custodial cleaning competencies certification prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical power cleaning and scrubbing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of professional cleaning methods and materials.
  • Steady lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and frequent lifting of over 75 pounds.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in maintaining and refinishing wood floors, and basic equipment repair; ability to be respirator certified for use of special finishes or seals; ability to perform responsibilities and characteristic related duties of the classification.  Expert knowledge of floor care as it relates to hard surface flooring.  Expert knowledge of the trizact floor care system.  Expert knowledge of floor care equipment including but not limited to a variety of floor cleaning machines, square scrub, floor buffers, floor burnishers, etc.  Expert knowledge of floor strippers, bases, and finishes.  Expert knowledge of the processes  involved with restorative floor work.
