Position Summary

The College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-system faculty position in the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in the area of AI-on-Hardware. We encourage applications for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor and will consider exceptional candidates for appointment at the rank of Associate or (Full) Professor.

Candidates must have an earned PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2025.  The successful candidate will be expected to develop a sustainable, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program; contribute significantly to their discipline through scholarly work; demonstrate effective teaching and mentorship of both undergraduate and graduate students; participate in institutional and professional service; and support the university’s mission in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candidates are encouraged to discuss how their research could have an impact and complement the existing strengths within the department.

All areas of research specialization will be considered, but the following areas have been identified as being of particular interest: AI-on-Hardware: With the rapid explosion of AI in our daily lives, specialized computer components and equipment are needed that run artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and models. These hardware platforms are essential for efficient and effective execution of AI tasks, where the type of hardware used depends on the AI workload and use case. Examples include Central Processing Units (CPU), Graphics Processing Units (GPU), Tensor Processing Units (TPU), Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and memory models for rapid data storage and access.

Other qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, an ability to work in a collaborative research environment, and a commitment to promoting and embracing diversity. Successful candidates will be appointed to an academic-year position in the tenure system, with tenure, if appropriate. Successful candidates are expected to elevate the reputation of MSU through their professional activities.  Those who conduct research that enhances or is related to aspects of inclusion and equity are of high interest.

Department Statement

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has robust research programs in several areas, including AI, Autonomous Driving, Biometrics, Computer Vision, security & privacy, Data Science, Evolutionary Computation, Machine Learning, Networking, and Software Engineering. The Department is home to 55 tenure-system faculty members and teaching specialists, including four endowed professors, 13 NSF CAREER awardees, and one member of the National Academy of Engineering. Our annual research expenditures exceed $11 million. The Department offers accredited B.S. degree programs in Computer Science and Computer Engineering and a B.S. degree in Computational Data Science. In addition to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, the Department offers an M.S. degree in Data Science in collaboration with the Department of Statistics and the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science & Engineering. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has strong interdisciplinary research and educational programs on a foundation of core electrical and computer engineering disciplines and provides first-class education while engaging in research at the frontiers of knowledge. The Department has 44 faculty members, including 14 IEEE Fellows, 14 NSF CAREER, 3 DARPA YFA, one AFOSR YIP awardee, and four University Distinguished Faculty members. The Department has strong research programs in all major areas of electrical and computer engineering, with annual research expenditures of over $16 million. Faculty in the Department are leading several federal and industry-supported centers including the Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest (CMW) for Coatings and Diamond Technologies. The Department has accredited B.S. degree programs in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.
