Position Summary

This position would require a successful candidate to work on site. 

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises, schedules, prioritizes and assigns the work of the support staff. 
  • Supervises event set-ups and/or special arrangements for conferences, special bookings or programs.
  • Assists in developing and coordinating major maintenance projects.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, evaluates and disciplines regular and student employees. 
  • Serves as a liaison with clients, customers, vendors and University departments in order to provide expertise in the area of employment. 
  • Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures. 
  • Oversees operations in order to maintain quality control and meet deadlines. 
  • Forecasts needs and orders supplies in order to maintain inventory levels. 
  • Prepares special and periodic financial or other reports and maintains unit records. 
  • Resolves employee complaints and grievances. 
  • Inspect facility operations in order to maintain health and safety standards in order to ensure compliance with University, State and Federal rules and regulations.

 

COMMUNICATIONS – INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Interacts with:

  • Support Staff - in order to provide work direction.
  • Department Administrator - in order to receive direction, assist in developing policies and exchange information.
  • Sales Representatives/Vendors/Repairmen - in order to receive information and services, expedite orders and resolve problems.
  • Co-workers - in order to discuss operations.
  • University Departments - in order to exchange information relating to unit operations.
  • Union Representatives - in order to resolve employee concerns and problems.
  • Public - in order to provide services and sell products.

 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS:

May provide first level supervision over regular and student employees.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE HEALTH-SAFETY OF OTHERS:

This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include training in the proper and safe use of equipment.

IMPACT ON PROGRAMS – SERVICES – OPERATIONS:

Errors in judgments made in overseeing operations could disrupt programs and services, causing inconvenience to students, faculty, staff and guests of MSU. Errors in maintaining records would cause problems to the Department in both quantity and quality of services offered.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Negligible disagreeable working conditions. The job requires moderate physical effort and involves eye/hand coordination, sitting or standing for long periods or viewing a CRT screen 26 - 75% of the time. Due to the nature of work this is not a remote friendly position. 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. May require valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.
  2. Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
  3. This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the internet. 

All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which would be acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical, vocational or business school with coursework in a field related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in performing tasks related to the area of employment, and may require one to three years supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience working directly with people from a diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, LGBTQIA+, and gender backgrounds. Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments and multiple social identities.
