Full Stack Developer
Position Summary
Remote Sensing & GIS Research and Outreach Services (RS&GIS) is a geospatial services unit within the Department of Geography, Environment and Spatial Sciences at Michigan State University. The development team is responsible for the design, development and support of websites, standalone applications and scripts, and web mapping applications to support RS&GIS projects and initiatives. This is a one-year position with annual renewal dependent upon funding.
Reporting to the lead developer, the Full Stack Developer position will:
- Assist with design and implementation of our internal content editing suite (CES), a custom website content management system.
- Assist the lead developer with project requirements and budgeting.
- Design, build and update client websites.
- Design, build and update web mapping applications in both open-source and COTS development environments.
- Build and deploy geo-processing scripts and/or applications that utilize Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (ML).
- Supervise and train part-time developer staff.
- Interact with MSU Information Technology.
- Attend weekly meetings with the development team.

RS&GIS serves as the primary geospatial support unit at MSU and supports a wide range of activities, including research and operations assistance, outreach, and education. Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Successful candidate must have demonstrated experience designing, building, and testing websites that are built in the NextJS framework, and ReactJS library, management and maintenance of both standard web databases and geo-databases, management and maintenance of windows servers for hosting web projects, building standalone applications and scripts using Python, JavaScript and/or AI large language models, and building geospatial datasets using open source and/or COTS solutions (e.g., Esri ArcGIS).
Desired Qualifications
Experience with various content management systems; a solid understanding of the ReactJS rendering cycle; knowledge of NextJS server and client side coding; experience drafting or assisting with drafting project budgets and requirements; knowledge of industry best practices in web design; participation in communities of practice for web design; interest in applying AI/ML principles into web-based systems; strong and clear written and verbal communication skills; enthusiastic about giving and receiving feedback.
