Position Summary

The Department of History seeks an Academic Advisor who will join our current advisor sharing responsibility for academic advising for a caseload of approximately 330 students. The advisor will promote recruitment, inclusion, retention, and student success through proactive interactions and academic interventions. This position is a full-time primarily in-person position that requires occasional evening and weekend commitments.
The duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Holistic and proactive academic advising focused around enrollment and degree planning for undergraduate students.
- Attendance at university, and college level trainings, meetings, and functions.
- Collaborating with the College of Education on curriculum development and student advising for students in the History: Social Studies Education major.
- Participating in new student orientation sessions throughout the year.
- Planning and assisting with programs, campaigns, and proactive advising strategies that enrich the student experience.
- Participating in events to recruit a diverse cohort of students to the department.
- Using information technology to support students including MSUs advising, and student information system, university and college websites, Microsoft Office and Teams, Google Drive, and Zoom.
- Utilizing confidential information and maintaining FERPA requirements while implementing academic policies, procedures, and protocols with high ethical standards.
- Developing and maintaining a strong working knowledge of campus academic, administrative, and personal support services for students, as well as relevant academic policies.
- Research, identifying, and connecting to students to appropriate college and university resources.
- Assisting in planning, conducting, and evaluating student learning opportunities and training such as major exploration, orientation, student learning support, and outreach activities.
- Cultivating a network of internship and professional opportunities on and off campus and assists students seeking these.
- Arrange and host career development workshops for students.
- Monitoring university and external scholarship opportunities and circulate information about them to advisees.
- Serving as advisor for the History association Phi Alpha Theta.
- Creative insight into meeting student needs.
- Ability to use new and existing technologies to manage data and communicate with students, including working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.

Required Degree
Masters -Education/Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or other relevant field
Minimum Requirements
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Experience working in an academic setting.
- Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to develop trust, rapport, and positive working relationships with diverse students, staff, and faculty.
- Ability to work independently while functioning as a member of a team.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and monitor deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
- Masters degree by date of hire.

- Knowledge of or ability to master relevant University, College, and History Department academic policies and procedures.
