Position Summary
Salary: $60,500 - $74,000 annually depending on experience. This position is not eligible for remote work; Regular, in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.
This position is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the activities of custodial staff across multiple campus buildings. Key duties include training and evaluating employees, planning staffing and scheduling, and enforcing departmental and University policies. The role also involves resolving employee complaints and grievances, maintaining inventory records, and responding to emergencies, inquiries, and complaints from faculty, students, tenants, and the public. Additionally, the position requires inspecting buildings to assess problems, damage, and overall condition to ensure timely repairs and uphold safety standards.
Job responsibilities are as follows:
40%: Direct the cleaning operations and custodial staff to foster a high-performance, innovative, and collaborative culture. Use Performance Excellence to guide, engage, and motivate staff, focusing on succession planning and lifelong learning. Recruit and retain a diverse, high-performing team, creating a positive work environment that supports equal opportunity and diversity. Promote and enforce departmental practices and processes, enhancing employee engagement through coaching, mentoring, and empowering staff. Lead with empathy, encouraging collaborative communication and innovation. Act as a steward to maintain the campus as a resource for teaching, demonstration, and research. Ensure accountability to University policies, emphasizing safety, compliance, and fiscal responsibility, and enforce departmental policy on dependability.
25%: Train and evaluate Building Lead employees within the assigned zone, and oversee staffing and scheduling.
15%: Enforce departmental and University rules and resolve employee complaints and grievances.
10%: Evaluate front line employees, and oversee staffing and scheduling.
10%: Assist with preparing short-term goals and objectives for employees; Evaluate performance of key services by conducting cleanliness and process audits utilizing departmental assessment tools.

Minimum Requirements
Knowledge acquired from two or three years of college, technical, vocational, trade or business school with coursework in Human Resources, Communications or Business; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work and supervisory experience in performing tasks related to the Custodial trade or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license at time of hire; must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
Desired Qualifications
Experience supervising custodial operations; experience with Microsoft Office products; experience working in facilities operations; knowledge of MSU policies and practices; experience with database software (such as EBS/SAP and Planon); good customer relations/service skills; ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team; ability to present concepts strategies to various audiences; solid organizational skills with the ability to multi-task yet give attention to detail with frequent interruptions; ability to work independently and on multiple projects simultaneously; aptitude and willingness to learn new software and data analysis tools and methodology.
A creative and innovative lifelong learner with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population; able to problem solve within a collaborative team environment; ability to understand different perspectives while utilizing expert knowledge of the technical operations of the job.
