Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development

Position Summary

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) seeks an Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development. This is a 100% administrative position (up to 15% can be devoted to scholarship). The Associate Dean reports to the CANR Dean and interacts frequently with the Director of AgBioResearch, the Director of MSU Extension, and the Associate Dean for Culture, Access, and Belonging in all matters pertaining to faculty affairs, and related administrative functions. The Associate Dean will also periodically consult with senior administrators in the CANR Office of Academic and Student Affairs (OASA) regarding assessment of graduate and undergraduate teaching.

Position responsibilities:  

  • Provide principal leadership for a college-wide effort to establish clear standards and criteria for promotion and tenure of tenure-system faculty, fixed-term faculty, and academic specialists.
  • Provide principal leadership and strategic development for college-level faculty development and honorific recognition (e.g., demystifying RPT (Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure) series, new faculty orientation).
  • Facilitate and moderate RPT process for all tenure system faculty, promotion for fixed-term faculty and academic specialists, and review and submission of dossiers for Provost-level review, including working with the college RPT committee.
  • Serve as Dean and Directors’ principal point of contact for approval of Faculty and Academic Staff position announcements and letters of offer.
  • Consult with unit leaders on matters pertaining to faculty and academic staff personnel issues.
  • Coordinate and moderate CANR faculty annual review process and salary equity analysis.
  • Provide Dean’s level review and approval for various requests (e.g., conflict of interest, outside work for pay for faculty, overload pay, professional service contracts, travel authorizations).
  • Coordinate with, and refer to, MSU Human Resources on Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Worker’s Compensation matters involving faculty and academic staff.
  • Other duties pertaining to faculty affairs as needed or desired.
  • Serve as CANR’s representative to the Council of Faculty Affairs Deans (COFAD).
  • Liaison with the MSU Office of Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs (FASA) and the MSU Office of Faculty and Academic Staff Development (OFASD).
  • Serves as liaison to, and attend, College Advisory Committee (CAC).
  • Supervise CANR Director and Assistant Director of Human Resources.

This administrative role is open to associate professors (tenure-system or fixed-term) demonstrating a strong trajectory for promotion and tenure, and full professors (tenure-system or fixed-term) at Michigan State University. Anticipated start date of appointment is July 1, 2025. AY faculty will be converted to AN for their term as Associate Dean.

Minimum Requirements

  • Tenured or fixed-term associate or full professor at MSU.
  • Administrative/leadership experience.
  • Record of accomplishment of concept development, implementation, follow-through, and attention to detail.
  • Strong record of scholarship (publications and grants / awards / Extension or classroom teaching).

  •  Academic governance knowledge / experience.
  • Knowledge of higher education tenure and promotion process.
  • Knowledge of MSU budgets and experience with CANR, AgBioResearch, and MSU Extension funding lines.
  • Ability to identify problems and use creativity to come up with solutions.
  • Project management knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate a diverse population where everyone will feel included and respected.
