Position Summary

The Asian Pacific American (APA) Studies Program at MSU is housed in the College of Social Sciences and explores the experiences of Asian Americans with strengths in the social sciences, history, and literature. Focusing on migration, globalization and diaspora, the APA studies program provides opportunities to explore the future of diversity in a global era. The program is a vibrant, active center for all members of the MSU community interested in the experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The Director of the APA Studies Program will promote and strengthen all activities within the APA Studies Program. The position is a three-year appointment, with an anticipated start date of 5/16/2025. The Director's key roles and responsibilities include budgeting, annual planning and reporting, collaborating with the APA Studies Executive Board and various levels of MSU Governance, community building and outreach, developing and promoting coursework and curricular initiatives, supervising non-tenure system employees, seeking and securing external funding, and student recruitment. Compensation may be negotiated but will roughly equal one course release per academic year and one month of summer salary (approximately 11% of the Directors salary). Summer work is generally flexible and can be done remotely.
This position will be appointed as either a Tenure-System faculty member, Fixed Term faculty member, Fixed Term academic specialist, or Continuing System academic specialist, depending on current rank at MSU.

Required Degree
Doctorate -Asian Pacific American studies, race and ethnic studies, history, anthropology, education, psychology, sociology or any field with a demonstratable focus on or engagement with Asian Pacific American studies.
Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate must:
- Must hold a doctorate degree in Asian Pacific American studies, race and ethnic studies, history, anthropology, education, psychology, sociology or any field with a demonstratable focus on or engagement with Asian Pacific American studies.
- This is an open rank posting and the successful candidate will be appointed depending on which rank/title aligns with their current MSU appointment. This position is open to a Tenure-System faculty member, Fixed Term faculty, or staff and academic specialist (Fixed Term or Continuing) at MSU.
- Demonstrate knowledge of issues central to the APA Studies community and field.
- Demonstrated record of impactful scholarship in Asian Pacific studies either through peer-reviewed articles or books published by academic press(es).
Desired Qualifications
- Administrative experience
- Experience with budgeting,
- annual planning, and annual reporting
- Experience supervising non-tenure system employees
- Success seeking and securing external funding, or potential to secure external funding
- Experience with student recruitment
- Experience promoting academic or curricular programming or initiatives
- Experience with community building and outreach
- Experience collaborating with different levels of university governance
