Position Summary
This position assists Dr. Andrea Glassmire with the research needs within the Chemical Ecology Lab. Activities include assisting with conducting greenhouse and field experiments; maintaining insect colonies and greenhouse plants; entering, managing, compiling data; assisting with organization; supervising and training student workers; assisting in maintenance of equipment; and ordering supplies and experimental insects.
This role involves both laboratory and field work, which requires a moderate level of physical effort. The job requires to handle potentially hazardous chemicals while adhering to Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) protocols and training.
Position is for 1 year from the start date with possible extension based on funding availability.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four- year college degree program in entomology, chemistry, ecology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience performing basic research techniques specific to the area of research employment such as: of work experience with projects related to entomology, chemistry, ecology; including the use and calibration of related equipment; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid vehicle operator’s license required to drive lab truck. A commercial driver's license is required within 60 days of hire.
Desired Qualifications
Familiarity with data entry, management, compilation, using excel software; experience with word processing and presentation software; experience using standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements; supervises and instructs students in the performance of basic research techniques; uses and calibrates research equipment; rearing insect colonies; managing greenhouse plants; may require training in natural product extraction techniques and using gas chromatography instrumentation.
Highly motivated recent M.S. graduate in entomology, chemistry, ecology, or related field. Experience in insect handling and rearing; experience in performing chemical extractions and using gas chromatography instrumentation. Able to assist with management of student assistants in the field and laboratory, maintenance of equipment, and ordering supplies.
