Position Summary

Applicants must currently hold a tenured position at Michigan State University, at the Associate Professor level or higher.

The College of Social Science (SSC) invites applicants and seeks nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Research. The successful candidate will be appointed in SSC Dean’s Office, with the remaining appointment being in the individual's tenure-home. This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Social Science and serves as an important member of the Dean's Senior Staff.

Duties include:

  • Working with the units in the College of Social Science to provide leadership, planning, vision, and oversight in promoting research, including identifying opportunities and working with other colleges and strategic partners within and beyond MSU.
  • Leading the implementation of the elements of the College and University Strategic Plans regarding research excellence.
  • Manage and administer contracts and grants staff who provide pre and post award support.
  • Overseeing the review of the College’s grant proposals for compliance with University and funder’s policy and procedures.
  • Building resources, including working with Advancement in engaging with alumni and friends of the College and coordinating teams for extramural grant proposals.
  • Representing the College in the University community, serving as a liaison for research matters and maintaining strong positive connections.
  • Advocating for and promoting the College’s research agenda within the structure of research foci in the Office of Research and Innovation and in University research related forums and representing the College on research related committees.
  • Seeking and promoting opportunities for cross-unit and cross-college research collaboration.
  • Convening the College research committee.
  • Collaborating with units and senior staff to promote faculty research recognition through internal and external awards. 
  • Working closely with the Dean to promote an enhanced research culture among faculty members in the College, including working with the College leadership team to continue the implementation of the research goal areas of the College strategic plan.
  • Organizing workshops and seminars to improve levels of externally funded research and scholarly activities within the College.
  • Promoting and facilitating public/private sector research and intellectual property development.
  • Offering support for individual faculty members in pursuit of research efforts that advance their careers.
  • Monitoring research activity.
  • Preparing periodic analysis and reports of research and scholarly activity in the College.
  • Facilitating interdisciplinary scholarship.
  • Responsible for compliance related to: human subjects participating in research, animal care program, international collaborations, research integrity and conflict of interest disclosures and management, environmental health and safety, export control and trade sanctions, and stem cell research.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must currently have a terminal degree and hold a tenured position at Michigan State University, at the Associate (minimum) or Professor (preferred) level. Successful applicants will be respected scholars with interest in administration, a record of extramural funding, and experience managing teams.

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated administrative competence. Knowledge of the research landscape. Ability to manage people represented by collective bargaining agreements. Experience with contract and grant compliance. Ph.D. or ScD preferred.
