Position Summary

Provide athletic training services for Recreational Sports & Fitness Services (RSFS) students/participants, including providing first-responder services for Club Sports, Intramural Sports, and other events, including injury care of students, evaluations, referrals, record keeping, and follow-up; evaluates injuries to design and execute appropriate rehabilitation exercises; educates and counsels coaching staffs, athletes, physicians, co-workers, students, parents, media, and consultants; maintains and implements comprehensive preventative physical conditioning programs for Rec Sports participants; administers emergency care and makes medical referrals; designs and fabricates customized orthopedic devices and checks equipment to ensure safety and prevent injuries; organizes and maintains daily records, including daily treatment logs and prescription drug logs using a computerized sports injury management program; instructs and evaluates student athletic trainers; coordinates student medical insurance claims processing and record keeping; actively participates in athletic training education programs; serves as a liaison with Intercollegiate Athletics Athletic Training, Olin Health Center; collaborates with MSU Recreational Sports staff and the university community; position requires travel to multiple indoor and outdoor fields and facilities;  work hours are variable with frequent weekend coverage for Club Sport teams and events and work hours are adjusted based on the need of program. 
Communicates/Interacts with: 
•    Coordinator of Athletic Training - to discuss policies and procedures of general health care matters.
•    Head Coaches/Assistant Coaches - to discuss athletes' and/or teams' injury status, restrictions on practice participation and projected level of game participation.
•    Team Physicians - to discuss overall health care issues of student athletes with their direct supervision.
•    Student Athletes - to counsel, provide treatment and rehabilitation of injuries/illnesses as needed in preparation for practices and competitions.
•    Student Trainers - to inform, educate, supervise, and evaluate skills.
•    Colleagues - to discuss and extrapolate on new concepts and ideas.
•    Health Care Consultants - to receive diagnostic expertise regarding specific health care concerns.

All positions in RHS are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency conditions, you will be expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Physical Education with relevant coursework in athletic training; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in all aspects of athletic training or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and certification by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA).
