Position Summary

The Institute for Water Research is seeking a Research Assistant I to coordinate field operations of grant-funded water research projects. The duties and responsibilities of the successful candidate are as follows:

· Perform experimental fieldwork

· Download and process data from field locations

· Perform assays for chemical analysis of nutrients and record/analyze results to provide conclusive data

· Consult with research supervisor to assist in planning and designing experiments

· Provide information to external contractors

· Install, calibrate, and maintain on-farm and water-related monitoring infrastructure, equipment, and instruments

· Monitor construction, alteration, or installation of systems to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and standards

· Oversee laboratory/field needs and assist with ordering materials, supplies, and equipment

· Conduct literature review to maintain current knowledge of research methods and terminology; compile results; and participate in preparing reports, manuscripts, and articles

· Assign work to and review work of students

· Monitor project progress to provide job status updates

· Occasionally lift heavy objects

· Operate power tools and hand tools and construct/maintain PVC plumbing

 

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in agricultural engineering, natural resources, or other related science fields.

· One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed.

· Excellent communication skills and fluent in English

· Valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position

 

Desired Qualifications

· Carpentry, building, and related basic constructions skills and familiarity with running power tools which may include drills, skill saws, hammers, caulks, and adhesives

· Experience with automated water samplers and other water quality-related monitoring equipment

· Experience and comfort working remotely as well as in an office setting
