Fitness & Wellness Coordinator

Position Summary

Oversee the proper execution of fitness programmatic plans in accordance with the MSU Recreational Sports & Fitness Services (RSFS) purpose, vision and values under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Fitness; recruit, hire, train, schedule, approve payroll, supervise, and evaluate student and part-time employees, including personal trainers, small group program instructors, fitness attendants, and program managers; create and present training and leadership development materials for Fitness and Wellness part-time staff; assist in the development and publishing of group fitness class schedules and format descriptions to align with current trends and the diverse interests of the MSU community; track and analyze group fitness class counts, completed PT sessions, personal training mentor/mentee hours, program goals/data, and assign personal training clients; ensure the proper compliance with risk management processes and protocols for Fitness and Wellbeing programs, staff, and participants. Maintain all risk management records according to department and University policy; teach both nationally accredited, and in-house developed training courses to prepare students to become PT and/or Group Fitness instructors; review, update, and track all student employee records, certifications, staff accountability documentation; manage payroll for Fitness and Wellbeing students and part-time staff; submit reservation requests for Fitness and Wellbeing programming, training, and special events; plan, collaborate and expand with campus partners for wellbeing programming and special events; oversee and staff the Campus Recreation wellness spaces; ensure all programming is conducted in accordance with university, department, and ACE/AFAA/ACSM risk management standards; assist in the promotion and publicizing of unit programs in conjunction with ASG Communications Manager; support the efforts of department initiatives, processes, and procedures. Review matters relating to fees, supervision, budget, and fiscal responsibilities; compile information and data regarding program attendance, risk assessments, preventative maintenance, surveys, and training evaluations to aid in programmatic decision-making and to compile monthly, mid-year, and annual reports; enforce and maintain RSFS policies as they pertain to the usage of facilities relative to competitive sports; create collaborative programming with other RSFS areas as needed; serve on departmental, divisional, or University committees as assigned. 

All positions in RHS are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency conditions, you will be expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If you have an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of your normally scheduled work hours remotely, you may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community. Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to a four-year college degree, such as, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Parks & Recreation, Sports Management, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health & Physical Education, or a related field; one to three years’ experience in Parks & Recreation, Sports Management, Kinesiology, or Collegiate Recreation programs; one to three years supervision experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent experience with collegiate recreational fitness; strong written and verbal skills to effectively communicate and build relationships with staff, public, and outside constituency groups; experience planning, delegating and supervising employees; ability to determine the needs of the facility and schedule staff to ensure safe facility operations; experience scheduling events, programs, and activities; CPR/AED, First Aide Instructor Certification; NASM, ACE, ACSM or any specific certification like Barre, Cycling, etc., or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
