Position Summary
The College of Agricultural and Natural Resources (CANR) is seeking an Occupational Safety Officer to enhance and lead the college’s safety management program. This senior level position will be responsible for overseeing workplace health and safety for CANR faculty, staff, students, and visitors while building and fostering a culture of safety. The successful candidate will work to develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve a comprehensive occupational health and safety management system that aims to meet ISO 45001 standard requirements, manage, and enhance existing CANR safety programs, and develop new programs as needed. This position will work to investigate safety and health concerns and maintain records necessary to demonstrate compliance with applicable federal, state, and local health, safety, and environmental regulations. This role will also work to evaluate faculty and student research projects for health and safety and/or environmental impacts and create strategies for managing risks.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing a Bachelor's Degree in engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, physics, chemistry or a closely related field such as environmental health and safety, or a science-related discipline; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in industrial/occupational safety and developing and delivering safety training; experience in conducting safety compliance assessments and audits; knowledge of federal occupational safety standards and practices; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.
Desired Qualifications
Successful candidates will have:
- Experience with occupational health and safety management, including MIOSHA General Industry and Construction standards, relevant to agriculture and research farm settings.
- Experience within an agricultural setting preferred.
- Experience developing and/or updating compliance programs as required by applicable regulations and managing and enhancing existing written programs.
- Experience creating or managing ISO Safety Management Systems or willingness to be trained in in the ISO system.
- Knowledge sufficient to serve as a subject matter expert in agricultural, general industry, and construction occupational safety matters, including but not limited to lock out/tag out, confined space, hazard communication, and respiratory protection.
- Ability to develop and deliver training which meets regulatory requirements and the needs of the audience.
- Excellent communication skills, in person and in writing, with a diverse range of people, including stakeholders, faculty, management, employees, unions, students, and the public.
- Proven leadership and success in developing and implementing a culture of safety.
- Ability to understand, interpret, research, and explain regulations, industry standards, and reports.
