Assistant Director of PASS
Position Summary
Partnering for Access, Success, & Support (PASS) is dedicated to advancing Michigan State University’s student success priorities throughout Student Affairs ensuring our institution’s holistic framework is implemented throughout the various programs and initiatives facilitated within the division. Guided by MSU’s Division of Student Affairs and in close collaboration with campus partners also, PASS develops inclusive, student-centered initiatives that empower students to thrive academically, personally, and socially across both curricular and co-curricular experiences.
The Assistant Director of the PASS reports directly to the Director and plays a pivotal role in advancing student success and institutional priorities through the division and cross-campus collaboration. This position supports the strategic goals of the division by integrating academic and co-curricular initiatives, utilizing data-informed strategies, and fostering inclusive practices that address the needs of a diverse student body. The Assistant Director focuses on the implementation of innovative student success initiatives that promote academic proficiency, student engagement, and leadership development. By working closely with campus partners, including Residence Life, colleges, undergraduate research and academic departments—the Assistant Director ensures that academic support and student affairs initiatives are aligned to meet student success outcomes.
- Implement research driven initiatives by identifying areas where academic success is closely tied to co-curricular engagement and student well-being.
- Coordinate efforts with Student Affairs to implement innovative initiatives that enhance the learning experience and promote academic proficiency, student engagement, leadership development, and holistic growth.
- Utilize a framework of equity and inclusion in all aspects of their day-to-day work. Promote access through the identification and removal of barriers, cultivate an inclusive working and learning environment.
- Conduct regular assessments and evaluations of unit initiatives, using data to inform decision-making and ensure alignment with student needs, unit and institutional goals.
- Conduct ongoing research studies using various methods such as surveys, focus groups, observations, and other relevant techniques to gather data and insights.
- Recruit, train and supervise staff while conducting regular performance evaluations.
- Serve as an additional liaison on matters related to Living and Learning for students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Serve on various Campus wide student success committees and task forces as assigned by the Director of PASS.
- Lead and collaborate with student affairs partners on department and AI-related research projects that advance knowledge in the field of education and student success.
- Coordinate the implementation of AI-driven projects aimed at improving student success outcomes and student affairs operations.
- Co-Facilitate Living Learning Community course to support and enhance the delivery of course content, student engagement, and to an inclusive, dynamic learning environment.
- Coordinate the planning, development, and implementation of course activities, assessments, and student support, ensuring alignment with the course objectives and institutional and department goals.
- Coordinate and implement academic support services initiatives and resources for PASS through collaboration with residential life and academic departments to enhance student success and engagement.
- Coordinate and implement Spartan Compass & Spartan Navigator for residential students to support student development, academic success, and community engagement within residential communities.
- Lead training sessions and workshops for Residence Life staff on academic support services and student success strategies.
- Facilitate communication and planning between departments to ensure seamless execution of residence-based learning communities and support services.
- Collaborate with Undergraduate Research to identify and expand research opportunities for undergraduate students.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Psychology or a related field; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in developing and implementing programs, policies and procedures and supervising and coordinating staff; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Masters or PhD in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Psychology or a related field; Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in student affairs, or related field, with demonstrated experience in leadership, data assessment, research driven student success initiatives; Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; Must be able to organize and implement student success initiatives in partnership with the campus community; Knowledge of current trends and best practices, student development theory, and academic integration; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Computer skills to include Microsoft Office, and Qualtrics for departmental reporting
