Position Summary
This Communications Manager in the MSU Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health is a member of the Marketing and C
ommunications infrastructure, with a primary reporting relationship to the Department’s Marketing Director. This position helps to support a highly productive and successful research team as well as the Master of Public Health program.
The successful candidate will execute strategic communications to promote the Department's mission, be an excellent writer utilizing public health communication frame elements to disseminate information, manage social media channels, work in various content management systems to edit numerous websites, support communications needs for fundraising and grant proposals, be an integral part of the planning committee for a national conference, and develop branded design content for digital and print.
This position will manage the online social media presence and help develop relationships with a community of exceptional scholars, staff, and citizen scientists from diverse backgrounds through event management and community outreach activities. Effective communication skills across a wide range of audiences are critical.
The Communications Manager will provide guidance for each program’s overall communication strategy/growth and assist with content and assets development. Communication will be a central piece of the strategy for the dissemination of findings and evidence-based practices.
Overview of responsibilities:
- Execute marketing and communications tactics to increase study participation and uptake, support policy advocacy efforts, and disseminate publication and research findings.
- Raise awareness of the projects and their missions, in partnership with the research teams and partners.
- Research materials, interview individuals, and collect information to write and edit compelling human-interest stories, promotional pieces, and reports.
- Create social media content for various channels, monitor and engage with external audiences, evaluate analytics, and make data-driven decisions to inform social media strategy.
- Design branded marketing materials across multiple channels, including websites, social media, electronic newsletters, merchandise, and print materials.
- Work in multiple content management systems to edit website content and support the creation of new websites for public health research teams.
- Support prospective student recruitment and student / alumni engagement activities for the MPH program.
- Serve on national conference planning committee to elevate brand reputation in the public health industry and among peer institutions.
- Build relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally.
This is a remote-friendly position. Candidates must have the availability to work in person in Flint, MI, as directed by the supervisor.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related field with at least 4 years of related work experience or Master’s degree in related field with at least 3 years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in communications, marketing, public relations, government relations, or a closely-related field; a self-starter with an outgoing personality that will represent the team in a positive manner; a team player who can work independently in a fast-paced environment, make informed decisions and prioritize tasks effectively; ability to manage multiple projects while adhering to deadlines; experience in the use of AP Style writing and editing techniques; demonstrated mastery and understanding of Web-based content management systems; strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills; attention to detail; excellent interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will understand and be familiar with the importance of community engagement and partnership to promote positive health outcomes.
