Position Summary
The Social and Emotional Neurodevelopmental Laboratory at MSU in Grand Rapids, MI is looking for a talented Research Assistant to join its team to support research activities. The individual will be expected to provide general clinical laboratory assistance to support research activities. The individual will also conduct research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols. The individual will perform assignments which are non-routine and vary in complexity with minimal direction. They will be expected to compile data and compute results for a variety of research procedures, tests, and techniques. The lab uses a combination of techniques in clinical research to better understand the functional disruptions in behavior in young children. These techniques include using highly-specialized behavioral software, and coding schemas to code young children at play in a variety of laboratory settings and remote eye-tracking in these same children.
Duties to be performed by the individual include coordinating the clinical research project. This will encompass setting up and maintaining IRB compliance, recruitment of research participants, screening and enrolling participants, data collection and data analysis.
This is an off-dated position with an end date one year from the date of hire, with the extension of end-date contingent upon availability of funds.
This is a part-time position at 70% effort for the initial year. Without additional funding, effort will be reduced to 50% after the first year.
Minimum Requirements
Kknowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Biology or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job requires completion of required Institutional Review Board (IRB) training and certification within the first 30 days of employment.
Desired Qualifications
Individuals will be required to use the following equipment and software: telephones, copiers, calculator, fax machines, personal computer, computer printer, computer scanner, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Windows, and Mac Operating Systems. Individuals will need to routinely travel to local daycare facilities and preschools for recruitment purposes. Individuals with knowledge of child development, or experience working with young children preferred. Ideally, candidates would also have strong technical, computational, and statistical skills. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in eye-tracking methodology and analyses, programming knowledge, and experience using R, MATLAB, or Python for statistical analysis and collection.
Candidates with clinical and/or research experience are preferred.
