Position Summary

Pay rate: $22.44 - $24.93 upon meeting probationary period requirements. This position is not eligible for remote work. Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs. 

This position will provide responsive customer service through the operation of vehicles and equipment to collect and deliver refuse and recyclable materials to appropriate destinations. This position coordinates and organizes the retrieval, transport, and receiving of surplus material. Assists in loading and unloading trucks, records drop-off information, oversees and trains student employees to ensure material arrives at appropriate location in an orderly, professional manner. Maintains clean and orderly receiving, storage, and staging areas.

Job responsibilities are as follows: 
 40% - Material Removal and Transport
Operates university vehicles in the relocation of surplus items. Leads other employees engaged in removing items, disassembly, reassembly, and transportation. Instruct assigned support employees in work methods and techniques. Oversees the loading and unloading trucks, records drop-off information, Monitors pickup of items to properly manage hazardous materials, items containing data, capital assets, and consignment items. Operate hand-held devices to assist in data collection. Clean retrieval area after item removal.

30% - Logistics and Scheduling
Coordinates and organizes the removal and transport of surplus material. Meets with campus partners to assess the status of items at campus locations. Determines best method for removal, including access and egress points, such as the availability of stairwells, elevators, etc. Utilizes resources such as Office 365 for scheduling and timelines. Responds or informs supervisory staff of complaints, comments and/or unmet service needs.

10% - Training and Oversight
Trains and leads student, temporary, and on-call employees to ensure material arrives at appropriate location in an orderly, professional manner. Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

10% - Vehicle Maintenance
Provide routine maintenance on trucks and equipment. Inspect and clean vehicles as instructed, performing daily VIRs.
 
10% - Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

Minimum Requirements

  • Three years experience as a Surplus Worker II or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, and processes used in surplus operations.
  • Possession or attainment of an MSU Forklift Operator's permit prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period.
  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan Chauffeur Driver's License by end of probation period. Applicant must have a good driving record and submit their license number on their application form for a motor vehicle record check. Must drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting material from floor and placing in carts.  Lifting and dumping recycling containers. Up to 75lb. for up to 3 hours a day. 

Carrying surplus items and recyclables from rooms or outside to carts. Up to 50 lb. for up to 2 hours a day.

Pushing carts of surplus, recycling, trash, and food waste. Up to 300 lb. for up to 2 hours a day. 

Climbing stair to get on and off trucks and on and off docks.
