The College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-system faculty position in the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). We encourage applications for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor and will consider exceptional candidates for appointment at the rank of Associate or (Full) Professor.

Candidates must have earned a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2026.  The successful candidate will be expected to develop a sustainable, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program; contribute significantly to their discipline through scholarly work; demonstrate effective teaching and mentorship of both undergraduate and graduate students; participate in institutional and professional service; and contribute to the university’s land-grant mission. Candidates are encouraged to discuss how their research could have an impact and complement the existing strengths within the department.

All areas of research specialization will be considered, but the following areas have been identified as being of particular interest:

  • Imaging and Diagnostic Technologies – medical imaging, molecular imaging, image-guided therapy, computational imaging, and biosensors
  • Robotics, Automation, and Intelligent Systems – bio-robotics, collaborative robots, and human-machine interaction
  • Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Engineering – musculoskeletal modeling, prosthetics, orthopedics, and injury biomechanics
  • Drug Delivery and Nanoengineering – targeted therapeutics, nanomedicine, and controlled release systems
  • Single-Cell and Spatial Omics Method Development – wet lab expertise in microfluidics, sample preparation, molecular barcoding, and advanced techniques for single-cell and spatial multi-omics analysis
  • Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine –stem cell, cell and tissue engineering, extracellular matrix, cell signaling and regulation, wound healing, cellular regeneration and repair, immune system interactions
  • Synthetic Biology/Bioengineering – design and modeling of biological circuits, protein engineering, cellular and molecular biology, genome editing, high-throughput screening
  • Healthcare AI - multimodal data integration for risk prediction and treatment optimization, AI for image reconstruction, segmentation, and disease detection; application of machine learning and computational methods toward biomaterial, drug, or biologic discovery and optimization.

Other qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication abilities, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment. Joint appointments with other engineering departments are possible, taking into account existing strengths, capabilities, and the candidate’s preferences. Department Statement

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Michigan State University was founded in 2016 and is poised for significant and sustained growth and expansion. BME consists of 19 core faculty and 22 adjunct faculty with a wide range of interdisciplinary interests, including bioinformatics, stem cell engineering, nano-robotics, neural engineering, and molecular imaging. BME faculty are funded through numerous external awards from a variety of sources, including multiple NIH R01 awards and three NSF CAREER awards. Approximately 40 PhD students are currently enrolled in the BME graduate program, and our faculty actively engage undergraduate students from various degree programs in their research, teaching, and outreach activities. The development of an undergraduate BME degree program is one of many potential future growth areas for the department.

The BME department is located in the Bioengineering Building, a 130,000-square-foot facility outfitted with state-of-the-art research tools and infrastructure. Our department is closely aligned with MSU’s Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (https://iq.msu.edu/). Research and training opportunities are available through multiple new initiatives, including investment in novel imaging systems, new partnerships with healthcare organizations (McLaren Health, Corewell Health, and Henry Ford Health), and the MSU Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).
