Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary position.


To sort, load, transport, unload, count, move, store, and prepare materials for recycling and surplus operations; to assist in operating recycling and surplus equipment and machinery; and to perform general cleaning and maintenance duties in related work areas.

 

Unit Position Summary

This position will sort, load, transport, unload, count, move, store, and prepare materials for recycling and surplus operations; assist in operating recycling and surplus equipment and machinery; and perform general cleaning and maintenance duties in related work areas. Surplus Store & Recycling manages the collection and processing of 40 million pounds of reuse, recycling, and waste materials annually for Michigan State University through a highest and best use model.

Primary Responsibilities:
People - Trains, communicates, and facilitates an environment that encourages service excellence.
Partnerships - Exchanges information with campus departments regarding MSU assets and sales; promoting environmentally and financially responsible decision making. Communicates with public and campus partners utilizing innovative collaboration.
Stewardship - Coordinates the movement and display of MSU assets, ensuring the best decision is being made with the placement of the materials while promoting the department initiative of landfill diversion.

This position is expected to work 40 hours per week with additional benefits including vacation (after 6 mos.), sick leave, and holiday pay.

 

Desired Qualifications

One year experience in a recycling, surplus or related operation; working knowledge of the tools, equipment and processes used in recycling or surplus operation; possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license; must meet MSU safe driving standards and drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification; ability to interact with, relate to, and work with college personnel and the public; frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds; possession or attainment of an MSU forklift operator's permit prior to the completion of the applicable probationary or trial period.

Summary of Physical Demands

Carrying surplus items and recyclables from storage location to second location.  Pushing carts of surplus and recycling to and from loading docks or trucks parked in outside areas.  Using carts or pallet-jacks to move large items up to 300lbs.  Climbing in and out of truck and onto tailgates.  Climbing ladders or stairs.
