Position Summary

The College of Communication Arts and Sciences seeks to hire an Academic Specialist - Advising to work with undergraduate students through the ComArtSci Academic and Student Affairs Office. The position will assist with academic advising, course selection, and connecting students with campus and local resources, and use technological applications to assist students in developing their academic plan. Additionally, the person filling this position will work with our student success unit under the direction of the Director of Student Success and Retention. In addition to academic advising, the new hire would be involved in one-on-one support of at-risk students, conducting probation meetings, liaising with various student support offices, etc. to promote the DEI initiatives of the college through advising and support of students.

Position Overview: To provide academic advising and student success support to undergraduate students enrolled as majors, major preferences, and minors in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences

Required Degree

Masters -College Student Personnel or related field

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel or related field.  

  • Ability to work as part of a diverse team and a strong personal focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a high level of tact, empathy, and diplomacy.  

  • Ability to work diplomatically and effectively with faculty, staff, and students, and to use sound judgment.  

  • Detail oriented with outstanding organizational, problem solving, and multi-tasking skills. 

  • Proficient computer skills are required in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience in an academic environment.

  • 2-4 years of advising experience preferred.
