Position Summary
Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the Large Animal Anesthesia Department and the Small Animal Anesthesia Support Center of the Veterinary Medical Center. The Large Animal Anesthesia Department works with a variety of large animal species including equine, porcine, caprine, ovine, and more. The Anesthesia Support Center is a branch of the Small Animal Anesthesia department that performs anesthesia to patients and provides supportive care. This position will utilize LVTs or LVN’s for their technical abilities and knowledge acquired through school in both areas of the hospital listed above. Some job responsibilities include techniques related to performing anesthesia (IVC placement, Intubation, Monitoring, Medication Injection, and Recovery) along with pre & post operative patient care on a variety of species while instructing and demonstrating these techniques to students. This position will also maintain supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of the anesthesia support center, the large animal anesthesia office, and all other anesthesia areas throughout both hospitals .
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug- dosing, and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software. An equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.
Desired Qualifications
Experience as a veterinary technician in an educational setting. Experience in extensive patient care, emergency/critical care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterile techniques. Experience in electronic medical records software or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Summary of Physical Demands
The veterinary nurse will be lifting animal patients onto cages and medical equipment; carrying animals between cages and exam tables and gurneys; pushing carts containing animals and equipment to other units; climbing stairs carrying lab samples; restraining animals; preparing for medical procedures and treatments. Lift animals up to 50lbs individually and up to 150lbs as a team.
Summary of Health Risks
Potential exposure to animals or specimens with Mycobacterium. Work with animals or unfixed tissue. Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort).
