Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Tenure System

Position Summary

The Department of Medicine at Michigan State University is making a transformative investment to build our research portfolio through the recruitment of world-class investigators. We currently seek candidates with active or potential extramurally funded basic/translational research programs for four tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Candidates with expertise in tumor cancer biology, particularly in tumor immunology/tumor microenvironment, tumor metabolism, and obesity/diet/microbiome-tumorigenesis links are encouraged to apply. This position is supported by Michigan State University’s Global Impact Initiative, which is designed to address grand global challenges and national priorities through the creation of over 100 new faculty positions in some of the most promising – and critical – fields of research.

Applicants must have a PhD, ScD, MD, or equivalent with an outstanding record of research accomplishments. Joint appointments with our clinical partners are possible for those medical professionals with clinical duties. Successful candidates will be expected to establish and maintain a vigorous, extramurally funded research program in their area of expertise and to contribute to medical and graduate student teaching and mentorship, and service to the institution and the community. Appointments will be on the Grand Rapids or East Lansing campus, both of which continue to grow and expand in terms of research innovation. Laboratory space, start-up funds, and salary will be competitive and commensurate with academic rank and experience.

Michigan State University has outstanding department, college, and university-wide basic and translational research programs that provide ample opportunity for collaborative research.  This includes the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine, two human medical schools, and many basic science departments. Additional opportunities for collaboration exist with investigators at the MSU Drug Discovery Program, Applied Immunology Center for Education and Research, Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering, Institute for Integrative Toxicology,  Precision Health, and a new Center of Excellence in Imaging and Image-Guided Therapies. Core facilities include advanced microscopy, mass spectrometry and metabolomics, proteomics, statistics, high-performance computing, genomics, and flow cytometry, to name a few. Support is available for grant writing, locating external funding resources, and processing grant submissions pre- and post-approval. Numerous internal funding opportunities are available to support emerging research programs. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to participate in graduate education programs at MSU, including the Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology (CMIB) and BioMolecular Science (BMS) programs. The College of Human Medicine has active faculty development and mentorship programs to facilitate career progression.
