Position Summary(Basic Job Function)
This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.
Unit Position Summary
The Michigan State University Libraries invites applications for the position of archives processing technician to help process and make accessible the backlog of archival collections in the Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections. Special Collections is home to more than 14 distinct collecting areas including: the Russel B. Nye Popular Culture Collection, Michigan Authors, Africana including the African Activist Archive Project, Radicalism of both the left and the right, LGBTQ+, Comics, Zines, Cookery and Foodways, and Rare Books and Manuscripts. Holdings are composed of more than 500,000 monographs and serials, and more than 900 archival collections.
The Archives Processing Technician will support the Archivist for Collections while gaining hands-on experience with archival collections by processing and writing finding aids. Duties performed could include:
- Collection surveying
- Arrangement
- Description
- Rehousing and labeling
- Writing of finding aids
The Archives Processing Technician will enable a new professional to identify and manage collections as well as gain experience in archival processing standards and gain first-hand experience of academic librarianship.
Position Terms:
1 year, with the possibility of renewal.
15-19 hours weekly.
Desired Qualifications
Must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate of an ALA accredited Library and Information Science Program or Information Sciences program and have an interest in archival science.
