Unit Position Summary
MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) Wellness & Counseling Office is seeking a compassionate and skilled generalist Counselor to provide direct mental health services to MSUCOM medical students. This part-time, on-call position offers a flexible 20-hour work week, 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period, providing in-person and telehealth counseling support to medical students. This position will be supporting medical students throughout their medical school education, across multiple campuses, and clinical rotation sites. This position plays a vital role in enhancing the emotional health and well-being of future healthcare providers, offering therapy, care management, and referrals to appropriate supports and services. The Wellness & Counseling Office is committed to supporting MSUCOM medical students throughout their rigorous medical school journey by offering robust mental health services and wellness initiatives in a safe, confidential, and compassionate environment.
This position will provide individual counseling services to DO, DO-PhD, and PA students as they navigate the demands of medical school and clinical rotations. This position will provide support for a wide range of personal, academic, and clinical challenges including stress, anxiety, relationship issues, burnout, family concerns, trauma, grief, and loss. Additionally, this position will provide comprehensive support through education, skill-building, counseling, and strategic planning in helping students enhance their overall health and well-being across all dimensions of wellness.
The position requires maintaining confidential documentation of student sessions and completing case notes in compliance with MSUCOM policies. The position will actively participate in weekly staff meetings and as schedules allow, student events including orientation programs, white coat ceremonies, and graduation. This position will engage in clinical supervision, professional development opportunities, and other duties assigned in supporting MSUCOM’s Wellness & Counseling Office’s goals, initiatives, and student support.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of graduate study beyond a Bachelor's degree, such as a Masters in Social Work or Licensed Professional Counselor; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a health/mental health environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; State certification as a Social Worker, Professional Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist (LMSW, LPC, LMFT).
