Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

LCS seeks a part-time Research Professional Aide to support veterinary and biomedical research projects within a translational immuno-physiology lab. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in clinical veterinary medicine, surgical procedures, cell culture, and student mentoring. This temporary position will play a key role in advancing animal health and research initiatives.

The part-time Research Professional Aide will assist in conducting veterinary and translational research projects related to animal health and physiology. The role involves hands-on work with animal models, laboratory assays, and mentoring of student trainees. The position supports the research team by contributing veterinary expertise, technical proficiency, and operational oversight to ensure study success.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Veterinary and Surgical Support (40%): Assist with animal handling, surgical preparation, implant procedures, and post-operative care under research protocols, with a focus on swine and rodent models.

Laboratory Research and Technical Support (30%): Conduct and support lab-based procedures including cell culture, sample processing, and data collection. 

Student Training and Oversight and administrative support (30%): Mentor and guide undergraduate and graduate trainees in proper lab techniques, animal care, and experimental protocols. Assist with maintaining research records, ensuring compliance with IACUC protocols, and coordinating with staff on operational needs. 

  • Must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 10 years of clinical veterinary experience, including surgical and procedural expertise in companion or large animals.
  • Demonstrated experience in aseptic surgical technique and post-operative animal care.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in research setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree 15+ years of clinical veterinary experience, including with swine or biomedical research models
  • Advanced proficiency in cell culture techniques and laboratory-based assays.
  • Prior experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate-level students in a research or teaching environment.
  • Familiarity with IACUC protocols, research compliance procedures, and translational research in animal health.
  • Proven ability to integrate clinical and research knowledge to support multi-disciplinary investigations.
