Position Summary
The ASG Retail Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for all Spartan Spirit Shop locations and functions. This position oversees store operations at 1855 Place and the MSU Union, as well as staffing, training, finance, and vendor data management. The Retail Manager ensures all retail activities align with university standards, financial goals, and customer service expectations.
The Retail Manager is accountable for staff supervision, budgeting, inventory and vendor management, event coordination, and fostering a culture of collabo ration and excellence across the retail team.
Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership & Oversight
- Provide direct supervision to Operations Managers (1855 Place & Union) and the Staffing/Training & Finance Manager.
- Serve as primary point of accountability for overall Spartan Spirit Shop operations.
- Collaborate with RHS Communications and Marketing Manager to align marketing with retail strategies.
- Develop and execute retail strategy in alignment with Auxiliary Sports Group goals.
- Establish consistent standards for operations, training, customer service, and compliance across all stores.
Financial & Business Management
- Develop and manage budgets for all retail locations and operations.
- Ensure compliance with MSU, SLE, and BF S financial policies and reporting standards.
- Oversee purchase orders, billing, payroll, and financial reconciliation through the Staffing & Finance Manager.
- Identify opportunities to increase profitability through sales growth, expense management, and partnerships.
Retail Operations
- Oversee day-to-day operations of Spartan Spirit Shop at 1855 Pl ace and MSU Union.
- Ensure accurate inventory management, merchandising, and point-of-sale processes.
- Support event retail operations including athletics, Grad Fest, and campus sales.
- Review and resolve escalated customer service issues.
Staffing, Training & Supervision
- Guide hiring, training, scheduling, and staff development across all locations.
- Provide leadership coaching to direct reports to foster accountability and high performance.
- Ensure compliance with HR policies, labor standards, and training requirements.
- Support student staff engagement, retention, and professional development .
Partnerships & Collaboration
- Maintain positive relationships with vendors, BFS, and campus partners.
- Partner with RHS Communications to integrate marketing campaigns with retail operations.
- Collaborate with Auxiliary Sports Group colleagues to align with broader university initiatives.
- Represent Spartan Spirit Shops in campus-wide committees and initiatives.
Other Responsibilities
- Conduct regular evaluations of retail operations for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Provide reports and updates to ASG leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of ASG.
All positions in RHS are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency conditions, you will be expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If you have an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of your normally scheduled work hours remotely, you may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical, or vocational school in a Business Administrative field related to the area of responsibility; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervising operational activities related to the area of employment; OR knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a Business Administrative field related to the area of responsibility; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervising operational activities related to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Supervisory experience in a retail operation; experience with systems such as Shopify, Yellow Dog, and Symphony; experience in a university or campus retail environment.

Work Hours
Monday- Friday 8am-5pm with occasional evenings and weekends based on business needs
