Assistant Manager

Position Summary

Salary: $72,900 - $89,100 annually depending on experience.  MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time;  Not eligible to work a partial remote schedule. Regular attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.  

This position will manage department communication, education, and outreach strategy, in addition to developing and managing sponsorship and volunteer programs. Manage organic waste processing operation. Assist Recycling Manager with MRF Management and Safety Programs. Interview, train, hire, schedule, and evaluate support staff and employees. Assist Manager with strategic planning, implementation, and reporting.

The job responsibilities are as follows: 
30% - Manage department communications, education and outreach strategy. Coordinate sponsorship and volunteer programs. Assist in cultivating academic, and community partnerships. 

30% - Assist in budget analysis, projections and preparation, and prepare financial reports for vermicompost program, communications, education, and outreach. Maintain records of operations and services to evaluate the effectiveness of the unit. Make recommendations for organizational changes and/or equipment applications.

20% - Interview, train, recommend selections and evaluate support staff and student employees. Direct and control work schedules and project staffing needs. Participate in the resolution of employee complaints and grievances.

10% - Prepare and approve requisitions for supplies, equipment and materials on an ongoing basis. Provide technical advice and supervise repair and maintenance of equipment. 

10% - Respond to inquiries and complaints to resolve service problems. 
 
This position will engage in high performing, leading edge practices, valuing people, partners, and stewardship.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical, or vocational school in environmental science, sustainability, or business administration with coursework in sustainability; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervising operational activities related to waste reduction and recycling; OR knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in environmental science, sustainability, or business administration with coursework in sustainability; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervising operational activities related to waste reduction and recycling; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license at the time of hire will be required for this position. Must drive University vehicle to perform the duties of this classification and meet the Universities rigorous safe driving standards.

Knowledge in vermicompost process.
