Position Summary
The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking a new member of the laboratory team for The Water Quality, Environmental, and Molecular Microbiology Laboratory (WQEMM) at Michigan State University.
Duties will include, but are not limited to: field collection of water/wastewater samples; PEG wastewater preparation, extractions, processing and testing of collected samples by PCR; data management and reporting of results. The position will also support data analysis and manuscript writing.

10% Field collection of environmental samples.
35% Preparation, processing and testing of collected environmental samples.
10% laboratory material sterilization and clean up
15% Testing techniques used include, but are not limited to: filtering Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), Quantitative PCR (qPCR), Microbial Source Tracking (MST).
10% Communicate and collaborate with labs to complete projects.
20% Data analytics & Manuscript writing
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in microbiology or biology; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques used in a water microbiology laboratory such as: Analytical Research, Molecular Biology- quantitative PCR/digital PCR, Agriculture, Public health, Epidemiology, Medical Research, etc., including the use and calibration of related equipment; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A current driver’s license is required due to sample collection responsibilities for the position.
Desired Qualifications
2-4 years of experience including experience with the following techniques: water filtration, PEG precipitation, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), Quantitative PCR (qPCR), strong organizational skills to be able to manage, coordinate, prioritize multiple tasks and projects; supervise junior analysts and students; ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
A Master’s degree in microbiology; water quality or public health related field.
