Position Summary
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at Michigan State University working with Prof. Laura Chomiuk on multi-wavelength observations and modelling of classical novae and related Galactic transients. Possible projects include simulating nova eruptions, measuring bolometric light curves, and testing models of shock production and gamma-ray luminosity. We encourage applications from candidates with no experience studying novae, and are open to candidates with diverse expertise, including studies of astrophysical transients, modelling stellar eruptions in MESA, and analysis of multi-wavelength data (including optical, X-ray, and/or other wavelengths).
Prof. Chomiuk's research group has active multi-wavelength programs to search for and study novae. MSU has guaranteed access to the SOAR 4-m telescope in Chile, and members of Prof. Chomiuk's group also have guaranteed access to a high-performance computing facility. MSU's Department of Physics and Astronomy hosts a diverse group of faculty, postdocs, and graduate students, working in a variety of areas including observational, theoretical, and computational astronomy. Members of the department are also highly involved in outreach activities and community engagement, particularly at the MSU campus observatory, which hosts a 24-inch reflector used for outreach, education, and research purposes. MSU’s campus is famous for its abundance of green spaces and vibrant atmosphere, situated in the city of East Lansing.
The initial appointment will be for nine months and is potentially renewable for another year upon mutual agreement.
