MSU Bikes Service Center Assistant

Position Summary

Salary: $52,900 - $64,700 annually depending on experience.  MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time; Not eligible to work a partial remote schedule. Regular attendance is required to meet business and customer needs. 

This position will assist with the business operations of the MSU Bikes Service Center. Assist with planning and implementing marketing strategies, providing customer service, representing the department at civic and external functions, develop plans to promote bicycling; oversee retail operations, including pricing items, developing retail policies and procedure; prepare reports, maintain records, and reconcile daily sales and make deposits. Assist with  item assembly, repair, and maintenance.

30% Sales and Marketing 
• Assists in recruiting new customers and engages existing customers and sales contacts using various sales techniques to increase sales and service utilization and strengthen public relations with the university and community. 
• Assists in developing print and digital promotional materials. 
• Assists in planning advertising strategies using surveys, evaluations, and related marketing tools to ensure maximum exposure and public impact. 

30% Customer Service and Outreach
• Serves as a liaison with clients, customers, vendors, and university departments. 
• Represents the department and university at civic functions, professional organizations, industry organizations, and related external events. 
• Assists in developing events to promote services and bicycling. 

20% Retail Operations and Merchandising
• Oversees retail operations, including evaluating resale opportunities, determining appropriate sales methods, assessing product value, and establishing pricing. 

10% Administrative, Reporting, and Contract Support
• Prepares special and detailed reports and maintains unit records. 
• Assists in administering contracts with vendors. 
• Reconciles POS and prepare deposits. 

10% Policy, Compliance, and Safety
• Assists in developing and implementing retail policies and procedures. 
• Maintains health and safety standards to ensure compliance with university, State, and Federal rules and regulations. 

This position will engage in high performing, leading edge practices, valuing people, partners and stewardship.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical, vocational, or business school such as an Associate’s Degree in Business with coursework in a field related to bicycle maintenance, assembly, repair, and sales; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in sales and marketing strategies in the area of bicycle maintenance, assembly, and repair; booking meetings, events and/or similar unit functions; and department operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license will be required for this position. Must drive a University vehicle to perform the duties of this classification and meet the University's rigorous safe driving standards.

Desired Qualifications

Experience working with tools and performing bike maintenance; experience working with bicycle vendors and parts suppliers; knowledge related to bicycling and related transportation alternatives.
