Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

The Department of Forestry at Michigan State University is seeking a field/lab assistant for the summer semester in 2026 (May to August, can start earlier). The assistant will be working on multiple research projects under the supervision of Dr. Akihiro Koyama. The candidate will be required to help graduate students conduct research in various environments, including labs, greenhouses, and fields. There is an opportunity to conduct her/his own research project. The position will begin as a 3-month assignment, with extension available depending on continued funding and satisfactory performance. 

Some of the work will be conducted at off-campus field locations which requires ability to walk on uneven terrain with a pack of equipment and includes exposure to inclement weather and plant/insect allergens.  Transportation to off-campus work sites is provided.  

Desired Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a bachelor's degree in a natural resource field, such as environmental studies or plant and microbial sciences. Position also requires experience in lab and field data collection and writing reports, such as extension and technical reports.  Ability to drive a large pickup truck is preferred - driver's license with acceptable driving record would be needed.
