Career Consultant
Position Summary
As a member of the ComArtSci Career Center, you will serve as an in-house Career Consultant for the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. The Career Consultant provides tailored, discipline-specific career advising to ComArtSci students through both virtual and in-person appointments. Primary responsibilities include supporting career exploration and decision-making, developing professional application materials, preparing students for internships and employment opportunities, and helping students navigate strategic career planning aligned with ComArtSci academic programs and career pathways.
In this role, you will partner with academic units, faculty, and college leadership to develop and deliver specialized career programming for ComArtSci students. This work focuses on advancing students' career readiness and professional development through the integration of career advising, programming, employer engagement, and career resources, while leveraging the broader services and opportunities available through the ComArtSci Career Center and Michigan State University's Career Services Network.
You will also develop and implement strategic communication efforts that engage students, alumni, faculty, and other stakeholders. Responsibilities include managing and enhancing existing communication channels, such as the weekly newsletter, student outreach campaigns, and LinkedIn presence, while identifying new opportunities to promote career development resources, programs, and outcomes.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Collaborate with ComArtSci Career Center Staff, Student Success, Academic Advising, Office of Inclusion and Excellence, Faculty and other college staff to deliver comprehensive career services for ComArtSci students.
- Provide college specific and interest area career advising in a wide range of modalities (in-person, online, group, individual) to students and recent alumni (within 2 years of graduation) focused on career planning, continuing education, and job-search strategies. Review electronically submitted resumes and cover letters.
- Connect students to resources, programming, and services of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and the Career Services Network through direct marketing, outreach, referrals, and collaborations with colleagues.
- Develop industry specific career content for use in courses, advising, and other student engagement
- Collaborate on college activities and initiatives, including bridge programs, career week and college career fairs, career development courses, mentorship, and other experiential learning.
- Develop and deliver presentations for student organizations, classes and other relevant campus activities.
- Develop and implement specialized career education programming and resources focused on career planning, internship/job search strategies, and professional skill-building for students within the College.
- Develop alumni networks for mentorship, career exploration, and other professional development activities.
- Support career services data collection and reporting efforts for destination and internship outcomes.
- Manage communications and social outreach for ComArtSci Career Center (LinkedIn, weekly newsletter, alumni, employer and other partner outreach); Prepare written communications, annual reports, and multi-media materials for distribution to constituents and stakeholders.
- Manage daily operations of career center.
- Other duties as assigned.
This position has an opportunity for remote work with a minimum of three days per week in the office as outlined by ComArtSci’s minimum remote work policy. Remote work is subject to change based upon the needs of the organization and will follow guidance and policy provided by MSU, ComArtSci, and your direct supervisor.
Minimum Requirements
This job requires knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing a master's degree in education, counseling, or a related area; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work in higher education/student services, student affairs, career counseling, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in career development, job search techniques, and employer hiring practices at the university level;
Experience working with university students in a career advising role or other career-related setting;
Excellent customer service skills and attitude;
Willingness and ability to take initiative;
Passion and ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders (alumni, faculty, staff, students) in the College and at MSU broadly; as well as industry partners;
Strong team partners and collaborators focused on the common goal of departmental and student success;
Strong desire to work with university students.
