Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

The Orlando laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University seeks a professional aide to support ongoing research focused on membrane protein structure and function. The successful candidate will assist with molecular biology, biochemistry, and structural biology projects investigating biologically important membrane proteins.

Primary responsibilities include performing molecular cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, recombinant protein expression, and membrane protein purification. The technician will conduct biochemical and biophysical assays to characterize purified proteins, maintain laboratory records, prepare reagents and buffers, and assist with general laboratory organization and operation. The technician will also support structural biology studies, including sample preparation for cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), and may assist with data processing and analysis under the supervision of laboratory personnel.

Additional duties may include maintaining laboratory equipment, assisting in training undergraduate researchers, contributing to experimental design and troubleshooting, and participating in weekly laboratory meetings and research discussions. The position provides an opportunity to gain experience in modern biochemical, biophysical, and structural biology techniques within a collaborative research environment.

This is an in-person position with no remote option.

Requirements for the position (prerequisite courses, qualifications, degree, experience, etc.):

Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field.

Demonstrated laboratory experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline.

Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and follow established protocols.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

 

Desired Qualifications

Experience with recombinant DNA methods, including cloning and site-directed mutagenesis.

Experience with recombinant protein expression and purification.

Prior membrane protein experience is highly desirable.

Experience with biochemical, biophysical, or enzymatic assays.

Enthusiasm for scientific research and contributing to a collaborative laboratory environment.
